Education and Outreach

2010 EcoGuardian Education Programs

Our work at GAMIING has always focused on making the natural world better by educating and involving members of the public. We focus on environmental awareness, healthy living and gaining an understanding of the natural world around us.

Our goal is to promote the stewardship, and the enjoyment, of nature. We provide educational experiences that actively engage the community in: balancing human needs with nature in our everyday life; discovering plants, animals, birds and water life; becoming stewards of our common environment, including water, land and air; and working towards a sustainable ecosystem for future generations.

GAMIING offers a range of education programs for youth and community:

      General Environmental Workshops
Children's Environmental Education Programs: on-site and outreach
       Nature Club
       Summer Nature Camp

Note: All downloadable forms and brochures require the free Adobe Reader ®.

ON-SITE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS

General Environmental Workshops

Flexible workshops are available for the general public — all ages welcome. For example, we may offer a half-day Shoreline Naturalization workshop, geared to cottagers, landowners, or real estate agents; a morning Tree Identification session; or a 2-hour evening Frog Call Identification workshop for a fun family experience. For upcoming workshops and costs, please contact the office 705-799-7083.

Children's Environmental Programs: The EcoGuardian Project

-available for grades K to 12

GAMIING has developed an educational program modeled around the concept of the ecological footprint. the EcoGuardian Project is aimed at developing a deeper understanding of our ecological impact on the natural world around us. The project advances students understanding of their role in the stewardship of our natural resources and gives them the tools to become active participants in their school and community.

Our curriculum-linked programs and workshops are designed to combine theory with hands-on experience in environmental science and outdoor education. We explore issues and topics on natural history, water, waste, erosion, landscape, geology, ecosystems, biodiversity, ecological monitoring and much more.

Our programs for children can be specialized to fit within a group's current field of study. They can be tailored to your needs, and adjusted to specific grades or degrees of study.

Our nature centre programs encourage students to explore the natural areas and ecosystems here at GAMIING and in the community.

We have a number of on-site programs to choose from:

 What's Wild (K-3)

 Wildlife is Everywhere (K-3+)

 Everybody needs a home (K-3)

Learning to look, Looking to see (K-8)

 Interpretive Trail Walk (K-8)

 Ethical Wildcrafting (K-8)

 Pond Study (Gr 2-8)

 Orienteering (Gr 3-8)

 Soil Studies (Gr 4&5)

 Introduction to Ecosystems (Gr 7)

 Tree Identification (Gr 7&8)

 Water Systems (Gr 8)

These programs have a cost of $10.00 per person.

Primarily, Gamiing relies upon volunteers for help in their initiatives. Perhaps you would like to lead one of the interpretive programs, develop an educational exhibit, or work with the school groups.  If you have any interest in working with the education department at GAMIING please contact Sandy Carrothers or Becky Minten at (705) 799-7083 or ecoeducation@gamiing.org.

  OUTREACH ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Can't get to the Nature Centre!! Let the Nature Centre come to you.

Due to a grant graciously provided by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, GAMIING has been able to design and develop Children's educational outreach programs.

Our objectives:
    • Effective environmental education
    • Modeling environmentally responsible practices
    • Combining experiential learning and classroom learning
    • Curriculum connections
    • Care, concern, actions in our place of living

The following programs are currently available:

"Mammals Can Fly - Who am I ?"

This program follows and interactive journey that demystifies the lives of bats. The program describes bat behaviour and ecology, with an emphasis on bats in our region. Current concerns related to bat conservation are introduced and common bat myths are dispelled.

    Nature Club

Nature Club is an informal, monthly, hands-on science enrichment program for children ages 8 to 13. Through a variety of fun indoor and outdoor activities, children can explore environmental and biological concepts, current issues, and the beauty of our natural surroundings. Through observation, experiment or art, children can learn to connect to our natural world.

'Naturally for Kids' Summer Nature Camp

Our camp program focuses on discoveries in the natural world, be it in the forest, the wetland or meadows. New discoveries are made each day. Exploration of habitats, animal tracking and learning survival skills will help campers understand our place in nature — and have fun doing it! Each day starts in the Discovery Shack with a game that relates to the theme of the day and the Camp will be concluded with a Show for parents, friends, and relatives.

Age: for children ages 6-12.    READ ALL ABOUT IT HERE.
