WHAT IS SHORELINE RESTORATION?

A shoreline Restoration Project is one of the most responsible and long term solutions to a number if waterfront issues. Our Nature Centre will provide a free consultation to interested landowners on exploring the best practices to be used on their shoreline.

To protect the water quality and shoreline integrity vegetation is the most efficient solution. We offer native plant stock that has been reared in our own on-site greenhouse and surrounding nursery beds. We can offer a wide variety of beautiful and effective shoreline stabilizing plants from wildflowers to trees.

One often overlooked benefit to introducing native plant gardens and buffer zones it the lack of maintenance and energy inputs they require. Native plants have evolved and adapted to the environmental conditions that exist in our region. The bottom line is that these species of plants will live where they are planted because they are designed to live there. No intense fertilizing or tending is required to maintain a healthy native plant community.

The area to be restored is plotted, and when possible, a project plan can be made to detail the arrangement of the stock to be planted. At times these planning efforts become redundant as the substrate is too rocky and/or irregular to adhere to a projected layout.

The exciting part is that each restoration site is unique. We focus on removing invasive species, introducing native vegetation to increase the biodiversity of the plant community, and at times reinforcing the shoreline with Our efforts result in more stable shorelines that are much more effective at filtering nutrient loading from runoff and thereby limiting the supply of these nutrients to the aquatic plant life that so often becomes a problem in our shallow Kawartha Lakes.

Our Restoration Projects are implemented with qualified staff and volunteers to ensure a speedy and effective implementation. Our previous projects act as demonstration sites and any interested landowner is welcome to contact our Projects Coordinator and arrange a visit to one or more of these sites.
